Fjordporten architecture is anchored in tradition and innovation. In Oslo, the development of the 19th century railway resulted in archaeological finds back to the medieval times, when the Norwegian city was then mainly built in timber. «Nordic Light» seeks to bring threads back to this tradition using wood as a culture-bearing material in combination with modern materials such as structural concrete and high-tech glass.
The «Nordic Light» tower will emerge as a lighthouse for the railway's sense of society, sustainability and environmental friendliness. At the same time, it will be a forward-looking and robust hub where transport, travel, work, leisure, culture and industry merge with Oslo Central Station and its surrounding context in a functional and beautiful way.
«Nordic Light» will be a highly efficient, pleasant, and innovative work and meeting arena. A place where competence development and networking will make it the most creative hub in the Nordic region - this in close proximity to Barcode, Oslo Central Station and Oslo airport. The redevelopment of the historic structure of Østbanehallen in connection with the new Fjordporten will become Bjørvika's next social big city. The rapidly growing population of the area, the density of hotels, the proximity to the Opera, the new Deichman Library and the Barcode will make this place a popular and natural meeting destination.
«Nordic Light» is a forward-looking and site-oriented project, based on the human-friendly as well as on the productive and environmentally friendly Nordic culture.
