Herentals Church

The project is designed to be a church as well as the link between the city of Herentals and the green Kempische ridge. The church is placed on the water and embraces the landscape. Due to its height, the building is a beacon but with respect for the context. The plan is a simple rectangle of 30 by 10 meters, and the shape of the building makes it recognizable and easy to read.

The approach to the church is an orchestrated tension build-up. The walkway through the water gives the visitors time to empty their head and to surrender to the sacrality and spirituality of the place. Once they are is standing in front of the church, surrounded by water, they can leave "the world" behind and surrender to the security of the church.
